Confused Soul, like some others have already said before me (see below in the comments), loosing Shukaku only means that the sand will no longer automatically protect Gaara. Being able to control sand himself has nothing to do with the one-tailed, but wiht Gaara’s own skill as a sand shinobi. I hope this helps clarify it for you.

If you didn’t notice, Gaara never actually used his demons powers in fights unless he was losing badly. He is able to control sand without the demon. Thats why his name is Garra of the sand. He can control sand just like their 3rd Kazekage. All the demon did was use the sand to automatically block attacks, while Gaara attacked. If he could use it’s powers, Deidara would have gotten his ass kicked!!!
